Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took the opening set in the tiebreak

Follow live updates from the French Open as the first round continues into Day Three of play at Roland Garros. Daniil Medvedev opened his campaign trail with a comfortable victory over Facundo Bagnes, who appeared to be suffering from a calf injury. The US Open champion and Australian Open finalist stand a chance of reclaiming his world number one spot if he advances further than Novak Djokovic in Paris, now grabbing his first win since returning from hernia surgery.

Later on, Stefanos Tsitsipas, last year’s French Open finalist, is set to face a tougher first-round match against 20-year-old Italian Lorenzo Mossetti, with Paula Padusa, Arina Sabalenka and Simona Halep starring on the women’s side. Home favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be looking to upset 8th seed Casper Rudd in what will be his last French Open appearance for the 37-year-old. Follow all the action and results from Roland Garros below:

Rod 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 4-2 Tsonga*

Rod mumbles to himself as a few easy mistakes creep into his game. Tsonga has two chances to hold his serve and he does so after Rodd netted with a return serve.

* Rod 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 4-1 Tsonga

There are some big groupings in this game, including one where Rod ends up with a powerful forehand kick. It’s a tough game from Tsonga who has a break point but can’t transform.

Rod holds the serve and takes control of the third set.

Rod 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 3-1 Tsonga*

can not. A massive forehand into the cornerback of Roode gives him the first break of the third set. The last time Tsonga broke he immediately got it back.

Can he do it all over again or are loopholes finally starting to appear in his game?

Rod 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 2-1 Tsonga*

Taaweel. Two massive hits are needed for Tsonga to survive in his service game. Rod recaptures the first but Tsonga meets the Sunde and shoots him into the mud where he bounces back on his opponent and ends up in the crowd.

Can he continue to send the transmission?

* Rod 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 2-1 Tsonga

It looks like every other match is going to falter no matter who sends it. Two errors by Ruud allow Tsonga to get back into the game, but the backhand slasher throws Tsonga wildly out of position and he can’t keep a comeback in play.

Rod 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 1-1 Tsonga*

Rudd has a chance to break but Tsonga recovers with only a second header in the match. In deuce Tsonga he puts together some great network play and hits Rod’s attempt at space.

The second ace in the game gives him the win.

* Rud 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 Tsonga

A deathly silence reigns around the field as Casper Ruud presents the first of the third set. The fans’ excited belief seems to turn into the nervous energy of their opponent.

Tsonga needs to keep winning service games. This is his biggest threat in the game.

* Rod 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4) Tsonga

Tsonga goes away and Ruud takes the group!

That could turn out to be a huge blow to the Frenchman’s hopes. Even at the height of his career, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was not the best in five sets. At 37 the bridge may be too far away.

He needs to win the next set.

Rod 6-7 (6-8), 6-6 Tsonga *

Something went wrong with Tsonga trying to take a shot away. He backs it up with a decent serve though and gets Rod out of play.

6-4 for the Norwegian player who can serve for the group.
