Suspect, employee of a mobile store injured in attempted robbery

Two people were shot Tuesday afternoon during an attempted armed robbery at a convenience store in a Northeast Baltimore shopping center, and city police said two people were killed at about 1:39 p.m. Tuesday at a Metro PCS store in the 5400 block of Sinclair Lane. I-Team has learned that the two people shot include the suspect and an employee of the cellphone store where the shooting took place, and police said an initial investigation reveals a customer entered the store around 1:25 p.m. seeking customer service. At the time, store employees told the customer that they would not be able to help him, and police said the customer then walked out of the store and returned shortly thereafter with a gun and declared a robbery. The staff began wrestling the suspect to get the gun when it was fired, and another store employee was hit in the leg. The gun fell to the ground, at which time the victim who was shot in the leg picked up the gun and shot the suspect in the stomach. Then the police were called. An employee who spoke with 11 News and was unharmed said the suspect appeared to be a routine customer looking at a tablet in the store when he pulled out the gun. More so,” said Carlos, a store employee. When asked about his colleague who was injured in the shooting, Carlos told 11 News, “Fortunately, we were told he would be fine. It was a flesh wound to his leg but other than that, he’s actually fine.” Police said the victim and suspect suffered non-life-threatening gunshot injuries and were taken to hospitals. The 11 News I-Team has learned that the two people shot include the suspect and an employee of the cell phone store where the shooting took place.

Police said an initial investigation reveals a customer entered the store around 1:25 p.m. to request customer service. At the time, the store staff told the customer that they would not be able to help him.

Police said the customer then walked out of the store and returned shortly thereafter with a gun and declared a burglary.

At one point, a store employee started wrestling the suspect for the gun when he shot, hitting another store employee in the leg. The gun fell to the ground, at which time the victim who was shot in the leg picked up the gun and shot the suspect in the stomach. Then the police were called.

An employee who spoke to 11 News and was unharmed said the suspect appeared to be a routine customer looking at a tablet in the store when he pulled out the gun.

(There was) only one pistol, and no more than that,” said Carlos, a store employee.

When Carlos was asked about his colleague who was injured in the shooting, he told 11 News, “Fortunately, we were told he would be fine. It was a flesh wound to his leg, but other than that, he’s actually fine.”

Police said the victim and suspect suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were taken to hospitals.

Police said the suspect will be charged with attempted armed robbery, reckless endangerment and various violations of a gun upon his discharge from hospital.

Investigators said they have not encountered any similar problem in this shopping center.
