A repost of the original ad for the Defense Assistant appears to indicate that Chryst is open to candidates who have not already participated in the program.

The Badgers went out of the program for three new assistants, including Sheridan, during this off season. UW announced the appointment of new offensive coordinator Bobby Ingram in late January, and Crist noted in March that the former college and prominent NFL future would coach their quarterbacks. Sheridan’s hire came in February, and the show welcomed Al Johnson back to directing the backroom running before spring practices began in March.

UW hired two new out-of-staff assistants ahead of the 2021 season in Cornerbacks head coach Hank Poteat and quarterback coach Gary Brown.

Some of the new outside employees have had direct contact with Chryst. Engram worked alongside Chryst in Pittsburgh as a wide reception coach from 2012-13. Johnson, a former UW center major, resided in Madison for two seasons as a graduate assistant for the Badgers from 2016-2017. Poteat also began his coaching journey with FBS as a graduate assistant under Chryst in Pittsburgh for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Brown, Ingram, Johnson and Petit played in the NFL as well.

INTERIOR OPTIONS

Chryst can only reset assignments with full-time assistant coaches, according to UW. This means that current Graduate Assistants and Analysts will have to apply for the Open Assistant Coach position.

Crest can go the inside route and reset the duties of the coaches already on his squad, as he has done for the past three months. UW introduced Sheridan on February 22, at which time it also announced new responsibilities for longtime assistants.

Bob Bostad transitioned from interior quarterback to offensive line duties, a room he coached between 2008 and 2011. Tight Ends coach Mickey Turner took on a new role off the field to oversee the football program’s recruiting endeavours.

However, spring practices have come and gone, and once again, a cabinet reshuffle may cause turmoil. Two of the assistants who previously coached the midfielders alongside Bostad are Chris Hering and outside full-back coach Bobby April III. Haering supervised the Pittsburgh quarterbacks under Chryst from 2012-13 and out linebacker in 2014 before being assigned to Madison. However, Crest announced before spring practices that Haering would take over the UW tight ends room, so he was actually moved once a season.

April previously coached NFL quarterbacks for the New York Jets (2014) and the Buffalo Bills (2015-16). However, he has mentored and helped direct Zack Baun, Andrew Van Ginkel and Nick Herbig into successful productions as the Badgers outside linebacker, with the two former players now playing in the NFL.

Two former players on the team also have experience in defense, although their overall training streaks are relatively green. Michael Caputo and Jack Secchi returned to the program this spring as defensive and offensive assistants, respectively. Their roles do not count among the 10 assistant coaches allowed, according to a second UW spokesperson.

Caputo, who recently worked with Baylor and former UW defense coordinator Dave Aranda As defensive quality control Trainer with experience of former Badger players. He spent time as an assistant at FBS level, doing safety coaching at Utah in 2019. The former All-American second team by the NFL Writers Association also saw time as an alumni assistant at LSU from 2017 to 2018.

Cichy, who recently announced his retirement from football in February, served in a volunteer role at UW last season. Former NFL-turned-NFL defender Jim Leonard has known since his time as a player, although he did not play during Leonard’s first season as defensive coordinator in 2017 due to a rupture in the AFC Champions League.

Finding replacements from within the program also occurred in 2021, when Ross Kolodzig transitioned from team strength coach and conditioning to his current position as defensive line coach.

Whoever replaces Sheridan will need to adapt quickly for a major period ahead. A busy season awaits at the recruiting track in June, and the University of Wisconsin is set to host several high school recruits for official visits next month.

The program has not updated its expected start date, which is currently listed as “on or after February 19, 2022.”
